The topography of the Finger Lakes region has been strongly influenced by water and glaciers. During the Devonian geological age, the Finger Lakes area sat beneath shallow seas. Nearly 400 million years ago, current rock was laid down as silt, layers of mud and sand at the bottom of the sea. With time, the Devonian sediments were compressed into rock.

Glacial movement has carved the Finger Lakes region into the wide “u” shaped valleys we see now. The many gorges found in the area had been formed from the waters of glacial melt.

Robert H. Treman State Park is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State in Tompkins County. The Park offers wonderful hiking trails through a gorge called the Enfield Glen. Winding trails along stone staircases follow the Enfield Creek past 12 different waterfalls. Visitors can enjoy a dip in the natural swimming pool located at the Lower Falls.

The Park is also home to Lucifer Falls with an impressive drop of 115 feet.
