Cacti in Canada?

There are two genus of cacti that grow in Canada - Coryphantha (also known as Escobaria) has one round native species that blooms with one or a few showy flowers.  The Opuntia group of cacti has three native species, all of which have flat, oval pads that branch off of each other.  Flowers grow at the tips.

Coryphantha vivipara var. vivipara is also known as the "Beehive or Pincushion cactus".  It is native to southern Alberta, southern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba.

Opuntia humifusa is known as the "Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus".  This species is native to the southern tip of Ontario and is listed as "endangered" on the Government of Canada's Species at Risk Public Registry.

Opuntia fragilis, or the "Brittle/Little Prickly Pear Cactus" is native to most of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba and western Ontario.  This species is similar to O. humifusa but has plumper pads and more spines.

The final Canadian cactus is Opuntia polyacantha, known also as the "Many spined/Plains Prickly Pear Cactus".  This plant is native to southern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan.  There are some reports of its appearance in the dry interior of British Columbia.

The Prickly Pear Cactus has many flat pads which are joined together.  This species grows quickly and is used in some areas as a living fence.  The small hooked spines are called "glochids".  When in bloom, Opuntias have flowers of yellow, orange or red.

Did you know....

that the Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus can grow in Canada and survive a cold Ottawa winter?

The Wonder
of Shrubs

"A hedge between
keeps
friendships green".

~ French Proverb ~

"The virtuous to
those mansions go,
Where pleasures
unembitter'd flow,
Where, leading up
a jocund band,
Vigor & Youth
dance hand in hand,

Whiles Zephyr, with
harmonious gales,
Pipes softest music
through the vales,

And Spring and Flora,
gaily crown'd,
With velvet carpet
spread the ground;
With livelier blush
where roses bloom,
And every shrub
expires perfume.

~ Charles Churchill ~
