Canada's Regions

Size: 15,084 KB

Type: Microsoft Office PowerPoint

# of Slides:  51

Appropriate for grades:  3 - 12

Description:

A presentation for elementary and secondary students introducing them to various regions in Canada.  The term region is defined and students are introduced to the fact that an area may be grouped into regions based on physical, natural, human or cultural characteristic similarities.

Canada's size is compared to other world countries based on land mass.  Canada's natives and settlement is briefly touched upon.  Canada as a multicultural country is illustrated.

An examination of Canada's regions begins with identifying each province and territory on a map.

Students are then introduced to regions based on physical similarities grouping Canada into Western Canada, the Plains, Central Canada, the Atlantic Region, Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Lowlands, and Northern Canada.

Each physical region is is mapped, defined, and photographically illustrated.  Each region is discussed in terms of area covered, natural resources, population, and climate.

New terms:  Province, territory, aboriginal, immigrant, native, indigenous, multicultural, cordillera, resource, Canadian Shield, glacier.

Note:  Canada is a large country with many regions.  The presentation is long and presents much factual data which may be overwhelming for one sitting.  Rather than breaking this presentation up into several smaller chunks, we've decided to leave it together as one.  Our suggestion is not to present all slides in one lesson. Portions of the presentation should be mixed with classroom discussion, assignments, etc.
