images Related to Transportation Transportation
is the movement of goods, animals or people from one location to
another. The word comes from Latin "trans" which
means "across" and "portare" which means
"to carry". Modes
of transport include air, road, rail, water, cable, pipeline and
space. Transportation has historically been important, for its
development enabled trade between societies and civilizations living
distances apart. The
first means of transportation was walking, followed by the use of
domesticated animals. One of the oldest types of transportation is
by boat. Explorers set out by boat to discover the world; sea
traders set out to trade their goods. The invention of the wheel had
a tremendous effect on how cargo and people moved about. The
Industrial Revolution in the 19th century resulted in many changes and
inventions that changed transportation means - the steam engine, steam
ship, followed by combustion engines at the turn of the 20th century. Did
you know.... that
in some parts of the world, people still travel mostly by walking or
riding animals?

Water
Boats
are watercraft that either float or "plane" across the water. The
term "ship" is generally applied to large vessels that are
built to cross the
ocean or to provide deep-water transport. Boats are just about
everything else. Another distinction is the fact that ships carry
lifeboats, while boats do not.

Transportation
Infrastructure
Transportation
infrastructure includes all fixed installations and transport
networks that allow transport vehicles to operate. Networks
include roads, railways, airways, canals, pipelines, etc.
Vehicles ride on networks and arrive at terminals (airports,
seaports, train stations, etc.) Operations deal with the
control system of networks and include things like traffic signals
and control operations. |
