What is a buoy?

A buoy is a floating object used for a variety of purposes.  While most are anchored and remain in a specific location, others float with the waves.  Buoys are often used to mark ocean channels and hazards to assist boats and ships in navigation.   If there are scuba divers present, you may see a buoy used as a marker to indicate their presence under water.

Some buoys are used for mooring.  Often sailboats, like the ones right, will return to a designated spot in a bay and will tie their boats to a mooring buoy.

Many buoys have various coloured lights on them in order to be seen in the dark.  If you are ever lucky enough to be on a cruise ship, watch for the buoys they use to navigate in and out of a port.  Much like an airport runways lights, buoys will guide a ship safely in and out of deep water.

Did you know...

that fishermen use buoys to indicate where they have dropped their lobster traps?

Life Jackets

Life Jackets are also known as pfd's (personal flotation devices) or life vests.  They are worn by people while traveling on watercraft.  In the case of an emergency, if a person falls into the water, they are designed to keep the individual afloat while keeping their airway clear of the water while unconscious.  Some life jackets are made of foam like the ones pictured here.  Other life jackets are designed to be inflated, like the ones aboard aircraft.

Mandatory safety drills while aboard cruise ships, for example, will teach passengers where their life jackets are located and how to properly wear them.  Many jackets are also fitted with a whistle and a flashing light so that the wearer may be more easily found in the water.

Many water activities such as fishing, jet skiing, etc., require that you wear your life jacket at all times.  Life jackets come in a variety of sizes so that you may pick one best suited for your age and size.

Life Preserver

Life preservers are also known as "lifebuoys" and "life rings".  As opposed to the life jackets above, these are designed to be thrown into the water to assist someone having difficulty remaining afloat.  While most are in the shape of a ring, they do come in other shapes as well.  Life preservers are found on ships and near bodies of water - lakes, beaches, swimming pools, lifeguard stations, etc.
