After my visit, I researched the meaning behind the depiction of a White God and found that there are many opinions, legends and stories.  My accounting may differ from other explanations.  I present here the story told to me by my guide - a man of Mayan descent.

My guide explained that this is the illustration of a man on a donkey.  It is of a White God who came to teach the Mayans about science, engineering, law, how men and women should live together, medicinal plants, etc.  According to my guide, the White God banned human sacrifices.  Some say he arrived on a donkey, other accounts say he came on a raft from across the ocean that glimmered and looked like giant serpents.

The Toltecs and Aztec of Mexico call him Quetzalcoatl, the Incas call him Viracoha, the Chibchas called him Bochia - "the White Mantle of Light", in Peru he was known as "Hyustus", but to the Mayan he was Kukulcán.  He was white with fair skin and blue eyes.

My guide theorized that Kukulcán may have been someone from Europe? Moses?  a Disciple?  Jesus?  Some theories say that Kukulcán was from another world from a higher race.

There are many fascinating stories that deal with the Maya snake deity named Kukulcán meaning "Plumed Serpent" or "Feathered Serpent".  It should be noted that there seem to be references to perhaps two individuals, one being a deity and another to a person having the name of the god.  One theory is that Kukulcán was the Vision Serpent that served as a messenger between the ruling king and the gods.

The Temple of the Warriors is another stepped pyramid alongside which are rows of carved columns which depict warriors.  There is a Chac Mool at the top of the stairway leading towards the entrance of the temple atop.

Excavated at the site was a statue of a figure on its back with its knees drawn up.  The torso is raised up on its elbows and there is a plate on its stomach.  The excavator named it “Chaacmol” (in Mayan this means "thundering paw" or "the paw swift like thunder") after one of the Maya's greatest warrior.   It was later renamed according to prevailing Yacatan usage  to “Chac Mool” which means "red jaguar".  This name is now applied to all statues of this type found throughout Mesoamerica.  There are more than three dozen such statues at Chichén Itzá.  There are some who believe that the still-beating hearts of human sacrifices were placed on the Chac Mool.

The columns along the south wall of the Temple of Warriors have pillars depicting soldiers.

The other sets of columns along the base of the Temple depict people, gods, animals and serpents.  It is thought that at one time there was some type of roof atop these pillars.

Further notes:

Evidence of human sacrifice have been found -- one of the cenotes (sink holes) was dredged and remains were found with wounds indicating human sacrifice.

The Temple of Warriors, the Caracol, El Castillo and the Great Ball Court have all been restored.

Although climbing the structures was permitted and very much enjoyed by the public in the past, many of the structures, including El Castillo, can now only be viewed from the ground.  El Castillo was closed after a woman fell to her death in 2006.
