The largest structure at Cobá  is the temple pyramid known as Nochoch Mul which comes from the Maya nohoch meaning "big" and mul meaning "mound".  In fact, it is the tallest pyramid on the Yucatan peninsula standing at a height of 138 feet (42 metres).  This is even taller than El Castillo in Chichen Itza.  Several stories tell of a Cobá ruling queen who married a priest from Tikal where you will find the tallest Mayan pyramid.  The building techniques at Cobá are very characteristic of the Guatemala Petan region from where the priest came and this seems to be the connection.

The structure is composed of seven bodies with rounded corners and two stairways on the southern side.

My tour guide advised that unlike Chinchen Itza's Kukulkan Pyramid which has forbidden climbing since 2006, visitors during my visit were still allowed to climb atop Nochoch Mul (as of August 2012).  For safety reasons, this site may also be closed for climbing at any time.

The climb to the top involves ascending 120 high steps to the top of the pyramid.  Climbing up is much easier than descending.  I am always afraid that one slip and fall by the person above me, will cause a domino effect and bowl down everyone climbing below them.  Has the climbing at Chichen Itza been ended to preserve the site or due to a large number of falls?

At the top of the pyramid one finds a small temple building which was added later.  There is also a carving of the descending god at the entrance.
