At the bottom left of the pyramid in front of the steps is a thatch covered Stela.  A stela is a Mayan monument of sculpted stone that contains carved faces, figures, or hieroglyphic text.  They were sometimes plain or overlaid with stucco.  It is assumed that they were one time painted in bright colours.

Most of the structures at Cobá have been estimated to have been constructed around 500-900 AD although evidence shows that it was probably settled around 100BC - 100AD.  It would appear that the city was an important one, since archeologists believe that the structures and temples were well cared for perhaps up to the arrival of the Spanish in the 14th century.  Cobá was abandoned in approximately 1550.

It should be noted that some evidence has been found of some Teotihuacan architecture at Cobá  indicating that there was contact with central Mexican cultures.  Cobá is assumed to have been a large and powerful city having large areas of farmland and control over trading routes.

It is further assumed that at some time, Cobá had a power struggle with emerging Chichen Itza.

Making my way back towards the entrance, I wandered the site looking at assorted structures and wondering about their use and the civilization that once lived here.  Casually taking pictures of the walls and stairways, I suddenly noticed that a canopy of trees was hiding from my view the second largest pyramid at Cobá  known as Templo de la Iglesia or "Temple of the Church" standing at 65 feet (20 m) high.  Since the steps are crumbling, visitors can no longer climb the pyramid.

For those of you for whom walking is difficult, please note that during my visit, bicycles could be rented.  There are also young men who will drive you around on a bicycle for a very low charge.  No excuses for not getting out there to see this magnificent site!
