Once the Mayan buildings are abandoned, the stuccoed floors and walls cracked.  Vegetation and water invaded and has caused weakness and collapse.  Although vegetation causes the initial sources of damage, it has also become the stabilizing agent holding the structures together with their roots.

For this reason, you will find may ruins covered completely or at least partially with debris, soil and vegetation.  Removing the debris will expose the structure to the elements and cause further deterioration.

My first stop was the Northwest residential compound. Being concerned about the mosquitoes in the area carrying Malaria and despite drenching myself in the highest deet-containing bug spray I could find, while wandering through the residential ruins, I was alarmed by a buzzing sound around me.  Instead of mosquitoes, much to my delight I found myself under a beautiful tree covered with purple blooms with hundreds of bees busily collecting nectar.  My guide explained that this is a Balch Tree from which the Mayans took bark and soaked it with honey and water.  Fermenting this concoction results in an alcoholic beverage that the ancient Maya believed to be sacred and a part of their rituals.

Next I visited and climbed the Acropolis which is the largest structure at Kohunlich.  The vaulted interiors are eight meters high and the north and east sides have false steps.  This structure was apparently covered by a huge platform upon which a restricted access residential complex was built.  The first original structure can still be seen.
