In the center of the Kohunlich site is the Plaza of the Stelas  (Note:  The correct plural of stela is stelae, so perhaps the plaque translating the name at the site is a misprint?).  It is thought that here, many different public acts took place.  To the east of the plaza is the Building of the Stelas which is a palace-like structure built around 600 AD.  At its base stand three plain stelae.  A stela is a Mayan monument of sculpted stone that contains carved faces, figures, or hieroglyphic text.  They were sometimes plain or overlaid with stucco.  It is assumed that they were one time painted in bright colours.

The above photos were not accidentally taken on an angle!  The entire Kohunlich site was built on platforms angled to drain rainwater into a complex drainage system of cisterns leading to a large reservoir.  The drainage system still works today!

In the western portion of the Plaza of the Stelae we find The Temple of the King.  Atop the Temple are two rooms which are built in perfect alignment so that during the equinox, the sunlight peaks in the middle axis and throws a beam of light across the Plaza of the Stelae into a small bricked-sized opening at the front of the Palace of the Stelae.  My guide explained that he believes that the light marks the beginning of spring, summer, fall and winter and signaled rituals and ceremonies in relation to the planting of crops.  I have, however, also heard about theories that the Mayans were actually tracking precessional figures, the earth’s orbit and epochs of time in order to warn future generations about cataclysms to come.  How the Mayans came to have such astronomical expertise is yet another topic often discussed by ancient alien theorists.
