Piazza Navona is said to be the most beautiful of all the Roman Squares.  The square contains great works of art such as Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers and the twin-towered church of Sant Agnese.  The piazza is busy with activity and you will find cafes and craftsmen selling their wares.

The Colosseum is the world's largest surviving structure from Roman antiquity and the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire.  It dates from 72 AD.  The stadium used to seat 55,000 and can be cleared of spectators in less than 20 minutes.  Animals, slaves and gladiators emerged from beneath the stage to perform such spectacles as hunts, executions, dramas and battle re-enactments.  The site was used in the early medieval era for housing, workshops, a religious order living area, and as a fortress, quarry and Christian shrine.

Unfortunately, the Colosseum was a source of building material for the Middle Ages.  This is the reason for so much missing stone.

  Did you know....

that the Colosseum had a very sophisticated backstage with hydraulic mechanisms that allowed the arena to be flooded for mock sea battles?

The arena at the Colosseum had a wood floor covered with sand (the Latin word for sand is harena or arena).  Below the floor were elaborate passageways in a structure called the hypogeum, meaning "underground".  Although the floor is now gone, from the images below, we can get an excellent view of the hypogeum.

The hypogeum had  two levels and consisted of tunnels and cages where animals and gladiators were held prior to the contests.  Eight "lifts" hoisted animals into the area from below.  Archeologists have found evidence of elevators and pulleys - used to lift heavy objects to the staging area.

The Roman Forum lies beside the Colosseum and is the oldest part of the city of Rome.  It is a rectangular plaza that is now surrounded by ruins that are believed to have been government buildings around a marketplace.  It was the center of power at its time.

The Pantheon is a structure that was built as a temple to all the gods of pagan Rome.  The building was built between 118 and 125 AD in order to replace a previous Pantheon of 27 BC which burnt to the ground in 80 AD.  The Pantheon has been in continuous use since its creation.  It is one of the best-preserved of all Roman buildings.  The Pantheon is also known as "Santa Maria della Rotonda" - St. Mary and the Martyrs - and has been used as a Roman Catholic church.

  Did you know....

that the inscription above the doorway "M. AGRIPPA.L.F.COSTERTIUM.FECIT" means "Marcus Agrippa son of Lucius, having been consul three times made it".  This refers to the original builder of the first Pantheon.

The Piazza in front of the Pantheon is called Piazza della Rotonda.

Tucked into a tiny piazza, you will find the magical Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain).  The name Trevi comes from the three roads - tre vie - that converge at the fountain.  Folklore says that if you throw two coins into the fountain, the first will grant you a wish - the second guarantees that you will return.
