Fraxinus is a genus of flowering plants that are part of the Oleaceae family.  They are commonly known as "Ash" trees.  Also part of this same family are Olives and Lilacs.  There are more than 60 species.

One way to identify an Ash is by their narrow, oval leaves which grow of "branchlets" with an opposite arrangements.  Leaves are pinnately compound and typically have 5-9 leaflets branched off a central stalk.  Fruits are winged seeds called "samaras" that hang in clusters from female trees.  Seeds are an important winter food source for many species of wildlife.

Red (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) or Green Ash (Fraxinus pennisylvanica var. subintegerrima) are the most widely distributed Ash in North America.  Green Ash trees are more prevalent in the western regions - especially in prairie zones.  Although they were categorized as separate before, they are now considered to be the same species.  The only difference between the species is the fact that the leaves, stalks, and twigs of the Green Ash are almost hairless, while those of the Red Ash have dense hairs.

Fraxinus americana, known as "White Ash" are the most common Ash in Ontario.  Colourful autumn leaves and a nicely patterned bark make this species a good choice as an attractive ornamental tree.  Leaves turn yellow or bronze-purple in the fall.

Did you know...

that the word "Fraxinus" comes from the Greek word "phraxis" which means hedges?  European ashes were often used in hedges!

Note:   Many Ash species are currently threatened by the Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus lanipennis).   This is an insect that was brought from Asia and first detected in Canada and the US in 2002 and has already killed millions of Ash trees.  Because of this threat, it has been recommended in many areas that no Ash trees of any kind be planted until effective control and eradication measures have been developed.

The Wonder
of Trees

"Even if I knew
that tomorrow
the world
would go to pieces,
I would still plant
my apple tree."

~ Martin Luther ~

"I think that I
shall never see
A poem as lovely
as a tree.

A tree whose hungry
mouth is pressed,
Against the earth's
sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks
at God all day
And lifts her leafy
arms to pray;

A tree that may
in Summer wear
A nest of robins
 in her hair;

Upon whose bosom
snow has lain;
Who intimately
lives with rain.

Poems are made
by fools like me,
but only God
can make a tree."

~ Joyce Kilmer ~
"Trees" 1914

"The best time
to plant a tree
was 20 years ago.
The next best
time is now."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
