Fagus or Beech is a genus of deciduous trees in the Fagaceae family.  This species is characterized as majestic and graceful trees.  They are spectacular landscape trees.

Of the 10 species of Beech worldwide, two commonly cultivated varieties are Fagus grandifolia (also called Fagus americana)  commonly known as the "American Beech or Red Beech" and Fagus sylvatica, the "European Beech or Common Beech".

The American Beech is a good choice for a large garden.  It creates a dense shade, but it's shallow roots means that growing grass beneath the branches can be difficult.  The American Beech can grow to be 20 metres high and 20 metres wide.

The European Beech is smaller than the American Beech, reaching a height of 18 metres.  The leaves of this species change from a lighter spring green to a dark green.  Fall leaves are a russet brown.

The smooth grey bark of each Beech species makes them easy to identify.  The bark contains hints of light gray, silver and blue.  It does not flake or split.

Leaves of Beech are oval and have serrated edges.  Leaves are green during the summer but change to dark brown, gold, yellow and red.

Following pollination, Beeches produce triangular-shaped fruits known as "Beechnuts" that hang individually, or in groups of two or three.  Fruits are produced when the tree is about 10 years old.  Nut "cupules" hold small triangular Beechnuts.

Did you know...

Beech trees are low maintenance species that can live for up to 400 years!

The Wonder
of Trees

"Even if I knew
that tomorrow
the world
would go to pieces,
I would still plant
my apple tree."

~ Martin Luther ~

"I think that I
shall never see
A poem as lovely
as a tree.

A tree whose hungry
mouth is pressed,
Against the earth's
sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks
at God all day
And lifts her leafy
arms to pray;

A tree that may
in Summer wear
A nest of robins
 in her hair;

Upon whose bosom
snow has lain;
Who intimately
lives with rain.

Poems are made
by fools like me,
but only God
can make a tree."

~ Joyce Kilmer ~
"Trees" 1914

"The best time
to plant a tree
was 20 years ago.
The next best
time is now."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
