Black Oak - Quercus velutina

Black and Red Oaks have very similar looking deeply-lobed leaves. The Northern Red oak has raised ridges on its bark in between which one can see a red inner bark. This results in the tree having what look like red streaks running down the sides of the trunk. Black Oak tree bark forms short strips that give the bark a “blocky” look.
