Picea pungens is commonly known as the “Colorado Spruce, Blue Spruce, Green Spruce, White Spruce” or “Colorado Blue Spruce”.  This is another conifer which is native to the Rocky Mountains of the United States.  Used as an ornamental tree, this species has been widely introduced in other areas.  In the wild, this tree reaches heights of 75 feet (23 m) with densely growing, horizontal branches.  Waxy grey-green leaves about 1 inch long (3 cm) grow in a circle curving upwards.  Pale brown cones are up to 4 inches (10 cm) long.  This species is a popular Christmas tree.

In the wild, trees grow in a variety of shapes including broad, conical and almost pillar-like.

Picea pungens comes in a variety of colours.  Only about a third are blue in colour and only a few percent are the blue-white colour we have come to think of when we hear "Blue Spruce".   Tree colour comes from tiny beads of resin on the needles.  New growth is always bluer than old.  One tree farm reported that soapy water will wash the resin beads off the tree turning a tree more green.

Did you know…

that “pungens”, referring to the leaves, means “sharply pointed”? The Blue Spruce is the state tree of both Utah and Colorado.

Picea pungens “Baby Blueeyes” is commonly known as the “Baby Blue Eyes Spruce”.  This is a semi-dwarf species with dense silvery blue-green foliage.  A slow growth habit of only a few inches per year results in a broad, pyramidal evergreen.  The Picea pungens species is native to the central Rocky mountains from southern Montana and eastern Idaho south to New Mexico.

The Wonder
of Trees

"Even if I knew
that tomorrow
the world
would go to pieces,
I would still plant
my apple tree."

~ Martin Luther ~

"I think that I
shall never see
A poem as lovely
as a tree.

A tree whose hungry
mouth is pressed,
Against the earth's
sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks
at God all day
And lifts her leafy
arms to pray;

A tree that may
in Summer wear
A nest of robins
 in her hair;

Upon whose bosom
snow has lain;
Who intimately
lives with rain.

Poems are made
by fools like me,
but only God
can make a tree."

~ Joyce Kilmer ~
"Trees" 1914

"The best time
to plant a tree
was 20 years ago.
The next best
time is now."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
