Abies fraser is commonly known as the "Fraser Fir". This species is very similar to the Balsam Fir. An excellent Christmas tree, the Fraser Fir has a nice pyramid shape and grows to heights of about 80 feet with a trunk diameter of 1 - 15. feet. Branches are turned slightly upward. The needles of the Fraser Fir are flat, dark-green with a medial groove on the upper side and two broad silvery-white bands on the lower surface. Leaves (needles) are about 1.2 to 1 inch long. Did you know... that it takes about 7 to 10 years for a Fraser Fir to grow big enough to be a 6-7 foot Christmas tree? Did you also know... that in the Province of Ontario, domestic and export markets for Christmas Tree production are dominated by the Fraser Fir and Balsam Fir, followed in popularity by the White and Colorado Blue Spruce? Other typical species grown as Christmas trees include the following: Eastern White Pine, Scots Pine, Black Hills Spruce, Engelman Spruce, Serbian Spruce, Canaan Fir, Concolour Fir, Douglas Fir and Nordman Fir.
