Pinus banksiana is commonly known as "Black, Scrub, Banksian, Grey, Hudson" or "Jack Pine".  This species is a small, coniferous tree that grown to be about 20 m tall who's crown is cone shaped.  It is a slow-growing tree that lives to be about 150 years old.

This conifer species has two short, divergent (spread apart) relatively straight yellowish-green (2-4 cm) needles in a cluster.  It typically grows in areas that have been disturbed by fire or logging.  Jack Pine cones are tightly sealed with a resin and will remain on the tree for up to 25 years.  The cones open when exposed to a fire or extreme heat.

The Jack Pine is depicted on Canadian artist (Group of Seven) Tom Thomson's painting "The Jack Pine" (This link will take you out of FreeTiiuPix to Wikipedia).  They are sometimes described as having a windswept look and are intolerant of shade.

A good way to tell a Jack Pine from a Scots Pine is to look at the needles.  They are in bunches of two, which spread apart to form a "V".  The two needles in a Scots Pine, however, twist together.

Jack Pine cones typically open during a fire, however, very hot weather will do it as well.  This cone opened in an area where there was no fire.  Photographed at Grundy Lake Provincial Park, Ontario.

The Wonder
of Trees

"Even if I knew
that tomorrow
the world
would go to pieces,
I would still plant
my apple tree."

~ Martin Luther ~

"I think that I
shall never see
A poem as lovely
as a tree.

A tree whose hungry
mouth is pressed,
Against the earth's
sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks
at God all day
And lifts her leafy
arms to pray;

A tree that may
in Summer wear
A nest of robins
 in her hair;

Upon whose bosom
snow has lain;
Who intimately
lives with rain.

Poems are made
by fools like me,
but only God
can make a tree."

~ Joyce Kilmer ~
"Trees" 1914

"The best time
to plant a tree
was 20 years ago.
The next best
time is now."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
