Pinus Resinosa is commonly known as "Red, Norway" or "Bull Pine".  This is a common pine found in Ontario and around the Great Lakes.  The name "red" comes from the tree's reddish pink bark.

This species of conifer can reach 35 meters in height with a trunk 75 cm in diameter.  It has shiny dark green needles (10-16 cm) that grow in clusters of two.  Tree trunks grow slender and straight and the bark is flaky and scaly bark.  The Red Pine grows in areas where soil fertility is low.

The Pinus Resinos has a pagoda shaped large bud.  Foliage looks somewhat a bristle brush, is brittle and breaks easily.  Cones are about the size of a large golf ball with no stalks.  The Red Pine is a large, stately tree with an oval-shaped pine.  Commonly planted in forests.

The roots of a Red Pine are widespread and grow fairly deep into the ground.  This tree can withstand strong winds without blowing over.

Did you know...

that tall, straight trunks were used as masts for British ships during colonial times.

The Wonder
of Trees

"Even if I knew
that tomorrow
the world
would go to pieces,
I would still plant
my apple tree."

~ Martin Luther ~

"I think that I
shall never see
A poem as lovely
as a tree.

A tree whose hungry
mouth is pressed,
Against the earth's
sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks
at God all day
And lifts her leafy
arms to pray;

A tree that may
in Summer wear
A nest of robins
 in her hair;

Upon whose bosom
snow has lain;
Who intimately
lives with rain.

Poems are made
by fools like me,
but only God
can make a tree."

~ Joyce Kilmer ~
"Trees" 1914

"The best time
to plant a tree
was 20 years ago.
The next best
time is now."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
