The Tamarack tree - Larix laricina -  is a type of Larch with its name "Tamarack" coming from an Algonquian word, "akemantak", which means "wood used for snowshoes".  It  has a delicate foliage.  It is considered a deciduous/coniferous tree since its needle-like "leaves"  turn yellow and fall in autumn. Other common names include:  "Hackmatack" or "American, Alaska, Black, Eastern or Red Larch”.  Trees are cone shaped and reach heights of up to 25 m.

Leaves are a light bluish-green with soft deciduous needles 2-5 cm long.  They are tightly spiraled in clusters of 15-60 at the tips of stubby side shoots.

The trunk is straight, 40 cm in diameter; young bark is grey, smooth and thin; older bark has peeling scales and is reddish-brown in colour.

Male and female cones are produced on the same tree.  The Tamarack has the smallest cones of any larch.  They are less than 1 inch long, at first bright red and then turning brown.

Not to be confused with other conifers, the Tamarack is NOT an evergreen.  Spring light blue-green needles turn bright yellow before falling in autumn.  This species is typically found in low-land areas and swamps and bogs.

Larix laricina is the only deciduous conifer!  Although some have described this tree as “stunning” in the fall when it’s needles turn to yellow, to me it looks like it is dead.

This species has a life span of about 150 years. The Tamarack is not particularly valued for lumber although its bark was used for tanning leather.  Tamarack trees are able to survive very cold temperatures and are often found along the arctic tree line at the edge of tundra.

The Wonder
of Trees

"Even if I knew
that tomorrow
the world
would go to pieces,
I would still plant
my apple tree."

~ Martin Luther ~

"I think that I
shall never see
A poem as lovely
as a tree.

A tree whose hungry
mouth is pressed,
Against the earth's
sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks
at God all day
And lifts her leafy
arms to pray;

A tree that may
in Summer wear
A nest of robins
 in her hair;

Upon whose bosom
snow has lain;
Who intimately
lives with rain.

Poems are made
by fools like me,
but only God
can make a tree."

~ Joyce Kilmer ~
"Trees" 1914

"The best time
to plant a tree
was 20 years ago.
The next best
time is now."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
