The Cornus genus includes about 30-60 species in the Cornaceae family.  Commonly, they are called "Dogwoods".  Dogwood trees are usually grown for their showy spring flowers, technically "bracts".  Dogwood shrubs are grown for their leaf colours and colourful winter bark.

Some of the most popular Dogwoods include:  "Flowering Dogwood, Cornus florida; Japanese Flowering Dogwood, Cornus kousa; Pagoda Dogwood, Cornus alternifolia; Pacific Dogwood, Cornus nuttallii; Gray Dogwood, Cornus racemosa; and the Cornelian Cherry, Cornus mas".

The images below were taken in southern New York state, and I believe them to be the Eastern Flowering Dogwood, Cornus florida.

Eastern Flowering Dogwood   [Cornus florida]

This species of Dogwood is also known as "Arrow-wood, Bitter Red-cherry, Common Dogwood, White Cornel, Dogtree, Florida Dogwood, Great-flowered Dogwood, and Virginia Dogwood".

Alternate-Leaf Dogwood   [Cornus alternifolia]

Although Dogwoods usually have opposite leaves, this species is an exception to the rule.  The Alternate-Leaf Dogwood grows as a small tree or a straggly shrub.  It is used as popular ornamental shrubs because of their many spring flowers, red fall leaves and purple, fruits that attract birds.

The many layers of horizontal branches have given them the common name "Pagoda Dogwood".   It is also known as "Green Osier, Blue Dogwood" and the "Pagoda-Tree". This species is very hardy and grows as far north as Canada's Lake Superior and North Bay.  Photographed in Northern Ontario.

The Wonder
of Trees

"Even if I knew
that tomorrow
the world
would go to pieces,
I would still plant
my apple tree."

~ Martin Luther ~

"I think that I
shall never see
A poem as lovely
as a tree.

A tree whose hungry
mouth is pressed,
Against the earth's
sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks
at God all day
And lifts her leafy
arms to pray;

A tree that may
in Summer wear
A nest of robins
 in her hair;

Upon whose bosom
snow has lain;
Who intimately
lives with rain.

Poems are made
by fools like me,
but only God
can make a tree."

~ Joyce Kilmer ~
"Trees" 1914

"The best time
to plant a tree
was 20 years ago.
The next best
time is now."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
