summer green forest deciduous treesWhat may seem like a forest to you, may not seem so to someone from a different culture or country.  Typically, a forest is an area that has many trees, although some consider any area with densely packed vegetation a forest.

Forests are made up of layers known as: the forest floor, understory and the canopy.

The Forest Floor is made up of decomposing leaves, animal droppings and dead trees.  These items compose and create new soil.  Emerging from the new soils and from beneath the leaves, are ferns, grasses, mushrooms, fungi and seedlings.

The Understory layer is made up of young trees that have become accustom to living under the shade of the forest's canopy as well as bushes and shrubs.rows of planted pine tree forest

The Canopy or sometimes called the Overstory, is the uppermost part of the forest.  It is the top layer of branches and leaves of tall, mature trees.  The term "canopy" comes from the fact that this layer forms a protective umbrella-like structure over the rest of the forest.

Types of forests are generally classified according to the species within its borders, their locations and climate.  Some forest types include:  tropical rainforest, sub-tropical, mediterranean, temperate, coniferous, montaine and plantations.  Plantation forests are those which are planted with future sustainability well planned out.  Plantation forests produce about 40% of industrial wood.

Most of the images below are of Temperate forests which are a mixture of deciduous and coniferous evergreen trees.  The broad-leafed hardwood trees shed their leaves each year in a climate which has well-defined seasons.

The Wonder
of Trees

"Even if I knew
that tomorrow
the world
would go to pieces,
I would still plant
my apple tree."

~ Martin Luther ~

"I think that I
shall never see
A poem as lovely
as a tree.

A tree whose hungry
mouth is pressed,
Against the earth's
sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks
at God all day
And lifts her leafy
arms to pray;

A tree that may
in Summer wear
A nest of robins
 in her hair;

Upon whose bosom
snow has lain;
Who intimately
lives with rain.

Poems are made
by fools like me,
but only God
can make a tree."

~ Joyce Kilmer ~
"Trees" 1914

"The best time
to plant a tree
was 20 years ago.
The next best
time is now."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
