Acer nigrum,  a. saccharum var. nigrum is also known as a "Black Maple,Sugar, Hard, or Rock Maple".  This species grows to a height of 60 - 80 feet (20-30 m) with a trunk diameter of up to 4 feet (50-150 cm).  It  has a very straight trunk with a dense, rounded crown.

Leaves are 3-lobed (sometimes 5 indistinct lobes) with a hairy or velvety lower surface with blunt, pointed-teeth.  Leaves typically have a drooping look.  Autumn leaves are yellow to brownish yellow, but seldom red.

The Black Maple is very similar to and often confused with a Sugar Maple.  A Black Maple has wider and drooping leaves, a longer leaf stalk (petiole) and a waxy coating on twigs that are greater than two years old.

See the bumps, warts or tumor-like growths  about 1/16 to 1/7 inch in diameter on the Maple leaves?  This is mutated leaf tissue caused by the feeding of a tiny mite named Vasates quadripedes or "Shimer".  The bumps are called "Maple Bladder Gall".  The mites hide on the tree during the winter and begin their work in the spring.

The bumps first appear green, then become pink or red, and finally black.  Although unslightly, they do not cause any harm or damage to the tree although the leaves may become so covered that they become misshapen and may drop off the tree early.

The Wonder
of Trees

"Even if I knew
that tomorrow
the world
would go to pieces,
I would still plant
my apple tree."

~ Martin Luther ~

"I think that I
shall never see
A poem as lovely
as a tree.

A tree whose hungry
mouth is pressed,
Against the earth's
sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks
at God all day
And lifts her leafy
arms to pray;

A tree that may
in Summer wear
A nest of robins
 in her hair;

Upon whose bosom
snow has lain;
Who intimately
lives with rain.

Poems are made
by fools like me,
but only God
can make a tree."

~ Joyce Kilmer ~
"Trees" 1914

"The best time
to plant a tree
was 20 years ago.
The next best
time is now."

~ Chinese Proverb ~
