Acer rubrum is also known as "Scarlet, Soft, Swamp and Curled Maple". This species is a medium-sized tree (20-25 m) with a fast growth rate. Trees live about 75-100 years, The Red and Silver Maple are very similar when leafless and the two often cross-pollinate to produce a hybrid known as Freeman's Maple [Acer x freemanii]. Lower branches tend to swing upward; showy red flowers are produced in the spring. Although leaves are red first thing in the spring as they start to open, Red Maple leaves are green during the summer; they turn a bright red in autumn. US colonists used to make a dark red ink and brown and black dyes by boiling the bark. Remember....

Maple trees flower in the late winter or early spring. The flowers in some species appear before the leaves, other flower with or just after leaves break from their buds. Depending again on the species, the flowers may appear as green, yellow, orange or red. The flowers of a Maple tree provide early spring pollen and nectar for bees.

After flowering, Maple trees produce fruit which are known as "samaras" or "maple keys". The seeds are produced in pairs with one seed being born in each "nutlet". Notice that the nutlets are attached to what look like wings? Children often play this these and call them "whirlybirds" or "helicopters", for as they fall from the tree, their shape allows them to spin in the air and be carried far off by the wind. Another favourite game my friends played was opening the nutlets and using the sticky substance therein to attached the samaras to our noses.
